Born in Seoul, Korea and raised in Northern California, Clara Lee (aka AZRA) is an Asian-American singer/songwriter and author of The Cupcake Theory. She is a graduate of Boston University and has experience in modeling, speaking, certified life coaching, and corporate management consulting.
Since Clara Lee was four years old, she dreamed of being a singer and teacher. She began to pursue her passion when, at 19, she woke up half-blind and was later diagnosed with Glaucoma. The next year was spent in and out of emergency rooms, doctor’s offices, and operating rooms and the bills were piling up. Doctors warned that her lifestyle of singing, dancing, and choreographing could lead to permanent vision loss.
When it seemed as if her health had stolen the opportunity to pursue her dreams and things couldn’t get any worse, she also learned the meaning of true friendships the hard way through seeing some of her friends departing her life due to her health and some new friends stepping in to her life to be there. Not one to give up so easily, Clara Lee looked inward and found new avenues of expression. It was during this time that she discovered her true passion-- fostering relationships and encouraging self-reflection and self-love in others. Out of this dark time (both literally and figuratively), The Cupcake Theory was born.
These days, Clara Lee can see out of both eyes and is pursuing her passions for music (as Substance Pop artist, singer/songwriter AZRA), entertainment, and fashion. Because of her experience with Glaucoma, she applies her talents in a way that helps others see what’s really important-- their inner beauty and self-worth.
The Cupcake Theory was written as a way to pay forward the life-changing gift Clara received during her darkest times. Clara uses the mediums of music, entertainment, and literature to accomplish her purpose of inspiring people to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.
